It took becoming a general in the U.S. Military for this man to see the horrors of the American Military Industrial Complex. [Here's] the wikipedia article on Mr. Butler's book, War is a Racket, which I am looking forward to reading as soon as I get my hands on a copy of it. [Here] is a link to another wikipedia article, this one about "The Business Plot." The Business Plot was an attempt by a group of individuals that possessed massive amounts of wealth, that of which was threatened by the new socialist ideals of FDR's Great Deal, to throw a coup d'etat to remove FDR from power and set up a fascist, corporate regime. Gen. Butler was tapped to lead a new committee under the new rule and be a figure head in the movement. He revealed all to the Special Committee on Un-American Activities whom eventually dismissed the theory as a hoax. It's interesting to think that this one man may of changed history forever... That kind of mental pressure must of been overwhelming. Regardless, General Smedley D. Butler is a new personal hero of mine and aught to be one of America.
From War is a Racket:
"War is a racket. It always has been. It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives. A racket is best described, I believe, as something that is not what it seems to the majority of the people. Only a small 'inside' group knows what it is about. It is conducted for the benefit of the very few, at the expense of the very many. Out of war a few people make huge fortunes."
